Blackberry (Rubus caesius) – pink family (Rosaceae).

If you accidentally stumble into brambles of blackberry – even rugged canvas suit will not stand,  because its thorns are so sharp and durable. Therefore, purple-black berries you should collect slowly and carefully. Sharp movements are contraindicated – spikes can seriously injure. But blackberry is so tasty and useful!

This shrub height is about 150 cm, stem shoots often arcuate, they are flexible and densely covered with strong spines. Blackberry leaves are trifoliate, and the lower ones are sometimes with five leaflets. White flowers are in loose racemose inflorescences. Berry is a black-and-blue-gray drupe.

Blackberry blooms from June to August, the berries ripen in August and September. It is common throughout the European part of Russia, except for the northern areas, is in Western Siberia, and Kazakhstan, Central Asia, Ukraine.

Blackberry fruits are edible, aromatic and tasty, contain various sugars, many vitamins, organic acids, micro-and macronutrients.

For therapeutic purposes, the leaves and fruits are used in fresh and dried form, the roots of the plant are used more rarely. The leaves are harvested during the summer, berries – as maturation, and roots – in autumn. Infusion of dried leaves have antiviral activity, helps when you have hemoptysis, gastric bleeding, hypercomplete Menor (heavy menstruation), edema and diabetes. Fresh and dried blackberry is used as an astringent, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, diaphoretic and diuretic, in addition, it calms the nervous system and lowers blood sugar.

The infusion of the dried fruits and leaves is used to treat diarrhea and dysentery in disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, acute colds, pneumonia, increased nervous excitability, pathological phenomena and menopause (hot flashes, insomnia, neurasthenia), and in certain diseases of the kidneys. Fresh fruits of blackberries are tonic, sedative and antipyretic. Outwardly you can use the infusion of dried leaves – in the form of rinses and washes – for the treatment of gingivitis, aphthous manifestations in the mouth, sore throat, eczema, herpes, ulcers, festering wounds. Decoction of the roots is used much less frequently – for diarrhea, dysentery, and thrombophlebitis. Sometimes people rinse throat with the broth.

Fresh fruit of blackberry is extremely useful. People make from it jam, jelly and fruit drinks. Cakes and pies with blackberry filling are very delicious. Preserve it drying like raspberries, just be sure to remove the stem. Leaves of the plant, slightly dried and twisted substitute tea – the original drink.

Because of long and non-simultaneous flowering of blackberry bees visit its bushes for a long period.Despite the small honey production (20-25 kg per 1 hectare), the plant provides a steady honey harvest. Blackberry honey is light and transparent, with a slight aroma.

However, we have more beneficial properties of the plant. It turns out that blackberry – a beautiful, natural (and sustainable!) dye. Berry juice stains the wool and cotton in a beautiful purple color. Craftsmen have long dyed woven and knitted products with blackberry juice.
Infusion of leaves: 2 tablespoons of raw leaves you put in 500 ml of boiling water. Keep for 1 h, filter. Drink 1/2 cup ~ 4 times a day before meals.

Recipes

Decoction of the roots. 1 tablespoon of finely divided roots you put in 500 ml of boiling water. Heat in a water bath for 10-15 min., filter and bring with the warm boiled water to the original volume. Drink 1/2 cup 4 times a day before meals.

Infusion of dried fruit . 2 tablespoons of fruit you put in 200 ml of boiling water. Keep for 15-20 minutes. Drink 2 – 3 cups in 1-2 hours (diaphoretic).

Powder of dried fruit. Take 1/2 teaspoon 3 times a day for children diarrhea. Powder is sweetened with sugar.

In folk medicine, blackberry leaves are used for:

Medicinal properties:

It is used in the treatment of cardiovascular disease (atherosclerosis, varicose veins, hemorrhoids), gastrointestinal tract, kidney stones, thrombosis.

Recipes:

Multiple sclerosis and atherosclerosis:
Fresh onion juice is mixed with an equal number of blackberry honey. Application: take a mixture for 3 weeks – 1 tbsз. 3 times a day 1 hour before meals or between meals. If necessary, treatment can last up to 2 months.

Sclerosis:

1 time a day at bedtime you drink 1 glass of lukewarm water with 1 tsp. of blackberry honey and juice squeezed of half a  lemon .

Atherosclerosis:

Chopped garlic is mixed with the juice of 1 lemon and 2 teaspoons of blackberry honey. Application: drink the entire mixture in 2 times in the morning and evening for 30 minutes before eating.

Atherosclerosis:

Mix 50 g of leaves and flowers of the willow-herb, 30 g of grass and flowers of St. John’s wort, 15 g of herb Leonurus and 15 g of birch leaves. 1 tbsp. of mixture you pour with 300 ml of boiling water, keep for 20 minutes. Application: drink with blackberry honey as tea.

Atherosclerosis, gout:

200 grams of lemon juice and 200 g of blackberry honey are boiled in a sealed container in a boiling bath for 30-40 minutes. Store in the refrigerator. Application: drink a tablespoon 3 times a day 30 minutes before meals.

Hemorrhoids:

Take 75-100 ml of juice of red rowan, pour 100 ml of cool boiled water and 1 tbsp. of blackberry honey.

Removal of stones:

3 tbsp. of dry herb wormwood keep in 2 cups of boiling water for a day, then boil and strain. Cool a little, add 100 g of blackberry honey and cook over low heat until thickening. Application: drink 1 tbsp. 3 times a day.

Urolithiasis:

Mince 10 g of horseradish, pour 3 liters of boiled water, leave or a day. Then squeeze, add 1 kg of blackberry honey, bring to a boil over low heat, but do not boil. Store in a glass container in the refrigerator. Application: drink 40 ml three times a day for half an hour before meals for a month.

Diuretic:

20 g of leaves of cranberries, pour 1 cup of boiling water, keep for 20 minutes, drain. Add 20 g of blackberry honey. Application: drink 1 cup 3 times a day.
