Borage is annual, stiff plant, its height is 60-100 cm (40”), root is rod. The stem is erect or ascending, thick, ribbed, hollow, branched above. Basal and lower stem leaves are elliptical or oval, obtuse on top, narrowed in a short stalk to the base, stem leaves are oblong-ovate, sessile, amplexicaul and are covered with stiff whitish hairs.  Flowers on long stalks are collected in curls, a calyx is dark- stiff, almost to the base is divided into linear-lanceolate lobes, corolla is longer than the calyx, dark blue, rarely whitish, with short tube. It has five stamens. Fruit – is oblong-ovate, finely papillose nut. Blooms in June-August. The fruits ripen in July-September.

Homeland of plants – is African coast of the Mediterranean sea and Asia Minor. You can see it in gardens and orchards as vegetable. Its leaves are used in salads, they have the cucumber flavor. You can use first two leaves that are not covered with prickly bristles.

Hash with borage 
0.5 liters of kvass – 5 – 6 leaves of borage, 4-5 leaves of watercress, 30 g of green onions, 10 g of dill, 40 g of potatoes, 1/2 eggs, 30 g of meat or sausage, 2.3 tsp. of sour cream, salt and sugar to taste.

Slice and rub young leaves of borage. Finely chop the leaves of watercress, chives, dil. Add boiled potatoes, eggs, meat or sausage and pour kvass and mix. Serve with sour cream.

It has grate fecundity, so you can collect plenty of it in the fall. The only problem is that the mature seeds are quickly showered, and in the room there is a risk of losing the entire crop because of the mice. If desired, borage can be grown every two weeks in the soil and you can germinate the seeds in a flat dish in the winter. Collecting young pink and ripe blue flowers for the salad and drying you must be careful – borage, as a fine honey plant, is loved by bees and bumblebees.

Dried upper parts, collected during the flowering season, and separately collected flowers are very useful.

Borage cures: articular rheumatism, gout, edema, gall-stone disease, irritability, anxiety. Borage has long been used as a diaphoretic (the Arabic name for it – abu arag – father of sweat), as a diuretic, for the treatment of pleurisy. Also it is used as a laxative, emollient and anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of the stomach, kidney and rheumatic pains. Borage infusion regulates metabolism and reduces the excitability of the nervous system. This herb is prescribed for the treatment of the neuroses of the heart, depressed mood, fears and insomnia. Even in ancient times it was considered as a medicinal plant, effective in the treatment of heart disorders, encouraging and refreshing a patient with hypochondriacal melancholy thoughts.

Borage is excellent bee plant, borage honey is light and fragrant, productivity is up to 200 kg/ha. It is very useful as a general tonic.
